Saturday, 29 September 2012 15:10

The ACES Lady Ravens volleyball team finished the 2012 season playing in the Delaware Valley League tournament on Saturday. ACES, the Number 4 seed from the North division of the DVL, faced Everest (Number 3 seed from the North) and Jefferson County North (Number 2 seed from the South) in pool play. The Lady Ravens knocked off Everest before falling to JCN, to finish 1-1 in the tournament.

The Lady Ravens started off the day victorious, as they beat the Everest Chargers 25-19 and 25-21. The win against Everest was a sweet one for ACES, after having lost to Everest in the season opener back on August 30. The Ravens executed great team plays throughout the match, which largely contributed to the win. Lexi Griffin led ACES with 10 kills, 7 digs, and 2 service aces. Hana Ronnebaum also did her part for the Ravens with 15 digs and 6 kills. Libero Grace Siebert added 11 more digs for the Ravens, while setter Ally Keimig had 7 digs and 8 assists. Ali McKibben added 5 assists. Ally Keimig, Ali McKibben, and Avery Wagner each had 3 ace serves in the game.

In the second game of the day, ACES played JCN. JCN proved to be a quick team, as the Ravens struggled to find open spots on the JCN side of the court. The Lady Ravens fell 10-25 and 20-25, in what would turn out to be the last game of the season for ACES. Hana Ronnebaum led the Ravens with 14 digs and 7 kills. Lexi Griffin contributed 4 kills and 3 digs. Avery Wagner had a season-high 11 digs, adding to Grace Siebert's 8 digs. Annie Hrenchir and Caitlin Growney each had 2 digs for the Lady Ravens. Setters Ally Keimig and Ali McKibben combined for 11 assists.

After finishing 1-1 (2nd place) in their pool, the Lady Ravens were elimiated from the tournament finals by JCN (2-0, 1st place). Everest went 0-2 on the day. Only the top team from each of the 4 pools advanced to the finals.

ACES finished the 2012 season with a 5-5 record (4-4 in the DVL). Congratulations to all the ACES volleyball players on a great season of hard work and dedication to the Atchison Catholic Elementary School volleyball team! Be proud of all the times you shined as a Lady Raven!

Kylee Stec led the Ravens in digs with 4, while Maddie Baniewicz, Catherine Kerr, and Delaney Elias combined for 9 more digs.

In the next pool play game, ACES defeated Jackson Heights for the second time this season, posting 25-18 and 25-20 victories. Heather Ronnebaum and Delaney Elias had 6 digs apiece, while Haley Miller and Kylee Stec combined for 7 more digs. Haley Miller led the Ravens in service aces with 3.

After receiving the second seed coming out of pool play, ACES had to play the ACES C team in the first round of the bracket tournament. In the semifinal match, the Lady Ravens were ready to play and win. The Ravens shut down the Pleasant Ridge Rams, 25-7 and 25-21. Haley Miller and Kylee Stec had 5 aces each. Kylee Stec led the Ravens in an amazing comeback in the second game of the match. With the Lady Ravens trailing 14-21, it looked as though the match would be pushed to 3 games. However, Kylee Stec went into the game to serve, and finished out the game, serving 11 straight points, including her 5 aces.

The Lady Ravens continued their winning ways in the tournament final, using their momentum from the game against Pleasant Ridge to stay fired up. Facing the Xavier Raiders in the final was a rematch from the first game of the day, in which ACES had split with Xavier. The all-Catholic school final was a neat experience for both teams, as the players and coaches from Xavier and ACES held hands together and said an "Our Father" right before the championship match began. ACES played hard, finishing their stellar day with 25-18 and 25-21 victories. Lauren Kocour racked up 11 total attacks, with 1 kill, as well as 2 assists. Megan Goracke had 2 kills, 2 assists, and 3 aces for the Ravens.
